Evolution of Average Electricity kWh Cost in Joburg

With the focus on Water Cost front and centre on this FirstLook blog, we have only just realised the failure to publish the Evolution Average Electricity kWh Costs in Johannesburg, long published for Water Charges. With this blog post, we are happy to rectify this oversight.

To clarify, the graph shows the Average kWh Cost, including: kWh Charges, Network Charges, Service Charges, DSML, Sundry Charges and VAT. The "Average Electricity Cost per kWh" is calculated by simply dividing the Total Monthly Charge by the Total kWh consumed for the month of December of each year, between 2012 and 2020. It is then easy to calculate the Average Electricity tariff has increased by a whopping 191.69% over the intervening 8-years.

Bearing in mind the Average Electricity Consumption, we can calculate the following:

Primary School
: Average Consumption per Annum 107,763 kWh (2020): Average Annual Cost: R325,142.00.Secondary/High School: Average Consumption per Annum 222,436 kWh (2020): Average Annual Cost: R691,776.00.
