Joburg Water Cost Calculator

As Johannesburg Customers well know, annual Water (and Electricity, Refuse and Property) Tariff increases are introduced on the 1st July of each year. And inspire of the difficulties being experienced in South Africa in 2020 as a result of COVID-19, this year is no exception.

Suntricity introduced in 2019 a Water Cost Calculator, a simple online tool where schools can visit and introduce the average monthly water consumption (in KL) and the tool immediately calculates the increase applied by the Municipality.

To access the Water Cost Calculator, schools can visit FIRSTLOOK™, school down the landing page to the Water Cost Calculator and introduce their monthly average consumption to understand the effects of the increases July 2020 to June 2021.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS:
Based on the Average Annual Water Consumption of 7,863 KL - Monthly 655 KL, increases are as follows:
Average Monthly Costs in 2019/2020: R45 205.79
Average Monthly Costs in 2020/2021: R49 298.80
This is a monthly increase of R4 093.01 and Annual R49 116.13 - an effective increase of 9.05%

SECONDARY/HIGH SCHOOLS:
Based on the Average Annual Water Consumption of 11,201 KL - Monthly 933 KL, increases are as follows:
Average Monthly Costs in 2019/2020: R64 630.76
Average Monthly Costs in 2020/2021: R70 587.62
This is a monthly increase of R5 956.86 and Annual R71 482.34 an effective increase of 9.22%

The difference in percentage increase is due to the fact that the first 200 KL consumption is at a lower KL tariff than consumption above 200 KL. If your school consumes just 200 KL per month, the percentage increases in just 7.77%. Therefore, the higher the average monthly consumption, the higher the percentage increase. This of course means it really is time to introduce water efficiency measures in order to reduce water consumption and waste.
